Raku is a firing process where the hot glowing pieces of glazed ceramics are removed from the kiln at 970 degrees celsius. The glazing cracks audibly due to the temperature shock. Those cracks are very visible in the final pieces. Then they are laid in sawdust which immediately takes a fire due to the heat. The black marks are remnants of that fire. To heighten the shock, they can be cooled in water. It is a controlled chance operation.

Raku fresh from the fire still flecked with ash.
